Hundreds of residents of Noen Maprang district on Wednesday tied ropes on the male elephant aged about 10-15 and pulled it on to the riverbank.
The pachyderm appeared to be extremely exhausted, lying on its left side and struggling to keep his trunk above the water.
After beginning the rescue at 4 am, the villagers finally succeeded at around 9 am. Veterinarians then gave the elephant stimulant shots to help him recover from this ordeal.
